Six Degrees of Laurence Hall Fowler

Here in the first quarter of the 21st century, when we think of “social networks” our minds turn to the internet – Google, Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, Instagram, and a whole host of other icons designed to connect us, keep us informed, and tell us what we ought to know. In the first quarter of the 20th century, social networking was not so different of a phenomenon; it just operated on a different platform built on the Baltimore Society Visiting List, or “Blue Book,” the Bachelor’s Cotillion, college friends, colleagues from professional circles, and the good word of people of influence. Baltimore architect Laurence Hall Fowler has often been called a society architect, but who exactly were his clients and his colleagues? How did he cultivate these relationships and to what result? This talk will explore Fowler in a social and architectural context, both in Baltimore and beyond.
